Travel insurance
Travel insurance is exactly what you need to have a peaceful vacation in case something unplanned should crop up. While you are away from home, certain unforeseen events may arise which are not covered in your usual insurance policy and so to be on the safe side, it is advised to get travel insurance before leaving on a trip. The goal of any insurance is to cover you in case of uncertain events so that you do not lose everything if something should go wrong; travel insurance makes sure that you are safe from a number of dangers while abroad. Services are provided 7/7 days and on a 24 hour basis.
The policy contract is of utmost importance to the insured as this is what will determine what is being covered or not. The policy may include:
Sickness insurance - Back payment for medical purposes if you are sick abroad and emergency coverage should you need special treatments. It can also cover chronic illnesses as well as medical coverage if you are travelling to disease prone areas and need medical treatment.
Health coverage – In case of injuries while abroad especially while doing extreme sports like skiing (sports/driving etc and can also include pregnancy coverage).
Death or disability benefit – The agency may pay out if the person dies abroad and can include abroad funeral services or cost of remains’ shipment.
Coverage of lost/stolen/delayed belongings - Can include emergency reimbursement of important belongings while abroad; or can be payment if luggage is lost through the airline. Though airlines must pay out if luggage is lost along their flights, it will not be the full material coverage. Nevertheless, there is a maximum limit to total luggage coverage that the insurance company covers and this should be checked out thoroughly during the policy making.
Trip cancellation or shortened trip - Where you will be covered have you already paid for excursions, hotel etc; back payment in case of airline strike (most companies now also offer terrorism coverage).
Flight cancellation/missed connection/delayed departure/non refundable ticket coverage
Legal expenses - If you have to demand compensation for any event or are involved in any legal matter while abroad.
Personal liability coverage – In case you are sued and have to pay out as in an accident in a rented car.
A number of companies offer travel insurance in Mauritius or it can be bought right from the travel agency; to get the best deal, it is best to look around for a while, checking out some agencies, the types of policy coverage they offer and go for the one most appropriate for you. You may get personal travel insurance or coverage for the whole family; insurance can also be expanded for student studies, business trips, leisure travel, short cruises, multi trips or international travels. It is important to make sure what the policy actually covers like full holiday reimbursement, extra coverage as to what you want and check out exclusions as in drug related incidents which are not paid out; also take good care of all your belongings as many companies may not pay out in case of personal inadvertence.
Travel insurance is the coverage of your luggage, health, legal matters etc while you are abroad that your usual insurance does not cover; it can include death, disability, personal liability, flight cancellation etc coverage.
