Only 8 Euro 2012 football matches will be shown on MBC
So you're not going to watch even the final?

Is a French National allowed to stay in Mauritius for more than 6 months after having a baby there?
France is among those countries where you are not required a visa to travel to Mauritius. If you've come here visa-free, then your visit should not exceed 3 months. See this link for more information : http://www.gov.mu/portal/goc/mfa/files/v...

Now it might be possible to extend your stay by going to the Passport & Immigration Office in person but the maximum length of stay you would get is 6 months. You will be required to leave after that time.

What do you think about Coca Cola Blowing Blubbles in the Sky marketing strategy?
Nice way of engaging their users I suppose. But once you've done it, I mean you've played it, you wouldn't do it again, would you? So although it's gaining a lot of traction now, it's a one off thing and they'll have to come up with other ideas to keep their fans entertained.

What would you do if you went to a restaurant and found a hair in the meal you ordered?
Some restaurants do not take hygiene very seriously and even posh ones sometimes fail at basic things like this. So if you ordered something and when your food came, you saw a hair or some other nasty thing in it, what would you do? Would you take the hair out and eat everything, eat around it, not eat at all or ask for a replacement? Or kick up a fuss?

It seems that MBC will only show 8 matches for Euro 2012. That's not very good news for football fanatics who don't have subscription to Canal+ or Parabole Maurice.

So how are you going to watch the kick-offs? At your friends, family or through the internet?

Top 10 Posts of the month on CleverDodo in our newsletter, what do you think?
We've just sent out the first issue of our Newsletter. You can view it online here : http://cleverdodo.com/newsletter/issue1....

The idea is to showcase the top ten posts on Clever Dodo and give credit to the contributors and to keep other members informed of the activity here.

This is going to be a monthly thing but exceptionally for this time, we've selected some Questions/Articles which are not necessarily from the April month. Our next release will be towards the end of May.

So what do you think about the newsletter and how can we improve it? Btw it will help if questions are upvoted to make it easier to choose posts for the next edition.

What do you think about the new 1 litre plastic coke bottle?
The new 1 litre coke bottle is ideal because it's easier to finish than the 1.5L or 2.25L. Well unless, there's a party or you've got a lot of people coming over, you wouldn't want the bigger bottles because once you open them, you really need to drink all the coke, otherwise it will go to waste because it will lose its fizziness and tastes horrible.

However I found that the plastic bottle costs Rs30 whilst the 1L glass coke bottle costs Rs19 in the supermarket. That's Rs11 cheaper but you need to buy the glass bottle first (Rs12 for that) and bring your own bottle when you buy again.

So why aren't more people buying the glass coke bottle when there's so much money to save?

How to save our monkeys and stop the animal cruelty business in Mauritius?
baby monkeyFor those who are not aware, monkey capture and export is a booming business in Mauritius and it's been more than 5 years that people are trying to stop this practice. Our monkeys are captured and caged and forced to live and breed in conditions which are completely different to what they are used to.

The average selling price of a monkey is $3,000 (US dollars) so you can imagine why this has become a profitable business. Countries like France, UK, Germany, Italy, Spain and the US buy our monkeys for laboratory testing and I'm sure you can imagine the ordeal they go through as all sort of things are tested on them (which can last for months) after which they are killed.

The are 5 main companies responsible for the monkey trading in Mauritius:

1. The Campeche Ltd
2. Primatological Ltd
3. Bio Culture (Mauritius Ltd)
4. Biodia Co Ltd
5. Prima Cyno Ltd

There was a time when Mauritius, being such a tiny island in the middle of the Indian Ocean, was unknown to many people and now it seems to have become very famous but unfortunately for all the wrong reasons. We are the second largest exporter of monkeys for lab testing but I'm sure we're on our way to beat China which stands first.

Let's fight this together - http://saveourmonkeys.mu

What other things can be done to stop this?

Phone numbers in Mauritius will change from 7 to 8 digits
The Information and Communication Technologies Authority (ICTA) is proposing the introduction of 8 digits telephone numbers because we'll soon be running out of numbers to allocate to people. The current population of Mauritius stands at 1.3M and 1.2M numbers have already been used. This means that only around 100,000 tel numbers are left and if we don't do something urgently, the country will be in crisis.

No date has been fixed yet for the changeover but mobile phones numbers will be converted to the new 8 digit numbering system first, followed by fixed lines and others.

In 1989, we changed from 6 to 7 numbers in our telephony system so it's been a good 23 years since we upgraded.

Most people know their phone numbers by heart and have some sort of attachment to them and it will be weird to have to adopt a new number. So what do you think about this change which is going to happen very soon? Are you for or against?

How much money do you think is enough to live comfortably in Mauritius?
Although the answer can vary from person to person, I'd be interested to know how much you think a person should earn to make a decent living. We're talking about an average person here who's got a modest car, a middle size house and can enjoy a treat once in a while (dinner out, holiday etc).

Please show your breakdown of the costs.

TelePlus, Mauritius first internet TV shows
DefiMedia has recently launched Web TV for us Mauritians. This will allow anyone with a decent internet connection to watch shows online. They do not have many programmes at the moment but hopefully that will change later on. Currently they have a Reality Show (Couple Presque Parfait), Archives Criminelles and Pour ou Contre.

It's quite a good start although we need to remember 2 bottlenecks - first slow internet connections will have a bad user experience and second lack of choice will mean less visitors.

Here's the link to watch the videos : http://www.defimedia.info/webtv/

So what's your opinion about it and which shows would you like to watch?

Does anyone believe in bad luck on Friday the 13th?
If you haven't realised yet, today is Friday the 13th and according to ancient superstition, this day is supposed to be the worst day of the year because it brings bad luck to everyone.

Many people are scared to go out and try to stay safe in their homes. From your experience, would you consider Friday 13 to be a bad and inauspicious day or just a normal day?

Is SBM Smile prepaid card a good option to buy online?
It seems that with the normal Visa debit cards that you get in Mauritius, you cannot make purchases on the Internet as they are rejected. In the UK, as long as a bank card is Visa approved, you can buy online without any problems but I suppose here it's different for some weird reasons (maybe the technology is not up to date.

Instead of applying for a credit card which will look at your salary and whether you'd be able to repay the money when you make an application, the SBM Smile card seems to be a good alternative. It's sort of like a credit card which you can use to buy stuffs online but you'll have to put money on it first before you can use it. So, if you put Rs5000 on the prepaid credit card, you can buy things up to that amount. That sounds good but I've got 2 questions:

1. I've heard that the card expires after 6 months and remaining credit is transferred back to your bank account. Is that true? Do you have to get a new card every 6 months?

2. Can you link it to PayPal? You need an address associated with the credit card to add it to Paypal but the SBM Smile card does not have your address on it. So how does that one work?

MCB SMS Refill does not notify your top up was successful
A week ago, I went to the bank to link my prepaid Emtel SIM to my bank account so that I do not need to run to the nearest shop each time I run out of credit on my phone. Actually I got frustrated to have to go out of my way to buy a prepaid top up card, scratch it, enter the long digits on the card to be able to finally make calls and send text messages. It took around 2 days to MCB to alert me via SMS that I was now able to top up just by sending an SMS with the amount I wanted credited. The text message is as follows and should be sent to 8700:

Refill 50

That would credit your SIM with Rs50. When I first did that, I waited and waited for some sort of notification that my top was successful but I didn't see anything. I thought maybe I did it wrong but before I resent the text message, I decided to check my balance and to my surprise, my balance has been updated. I thought this was weird and very misleading because MCB should have alerted me that my top up was successful (or Emtel should have done it).

Anyway, I wanted to ask whether anyone had similar problems (no notification of successful top up) and I also noticed that my top up amount was not subject to VAT, is that correct? I topped up Rs50 and got credited with Rs50, is it not supposed to be something like Rs42.50? Or will MCB charged me Rs50 + VAT on my bank account?

Update : I looked at my bank statement and noticed that I was charged the top up amount + VAT.

Bharat Telecom offering 2Mbs Internet and 40 TV channels at Rs280 in Mauritius
For those who've never heard of Bharat Telecom, it's a huge company in India which has partnered with Mauritius to offer its telecommunications services to us. The government has said a number of times that internet prices will decrease in the coming years and so far because Mauritius Telecom was the only reliable ISP, we all had to put up with the bad service for their MyT packages.

However that could all change now with the coming of this new player as we'll be able to get 40 IPTV channels and 2Mbs internet connection speed for just Rs280 per month. Compare that with Rs1500 for the 2Mbs MyT package and it looks like an 80% saving.

Is anyone considering to switch to Bharat Telecom?

Where to buy cheap printer cartridges in Mauritius?
I've got a Canon MP210 All In One printer (scanner, photocopier and printer) and my ink cartridges have finished for both black and colour. I bought a refilled cartridge from eBay but unfortunately after first use, it's no longer being recognised by the printer.

I can live without printing for a while but the Canon printer won't let me access the other functions as well which means I cannot scan any documents because it says I need to get the cartridges fixed first. I've tried all solutions on the Internet (resetting memory, tricking the printer to think the refill cartridge is full of ink etc) but nothing seems to work.

Therefore I need to buy new ones. Can someone tell me where I can get cheap printer cartridges (refill or original does not matter, I'll take my chances as long as the price is good)?

Any English TV channels provider besides DSTV?
I'm wondering whether there are any TV packages in Mauritius where you can watch movies in English. Parabole Maurice and Canal Sat have most programmes in French and it seems that DSTV is the only subscription that you can get for English TV. They seem quite expensive though - Rs2400 per month.

Does anyone know any other providers? Or better yet if I can get a satellite dish, will I be able to catch other TV network transmission and maybe get more channels?

Thinking of redesigning the homepage of Clever Dodo, please give your feedback
Users have asked to have all the questions (English, French and Creole) on the homepage so that they don't need to check 3 different URLs to see new questions and that's going live in the next release.

However I wanted to change the homepage in such a way that visitors can easily see new questions as well as new articles. At the moment, not many people are aware of the new articles that we release. We tend to release articles on topics where there's a lack of information on the web and it would be nice if they were more prominent on the site, right?

I'm also thinking of maybe launching a classifieds and directory sections to bring more facilities to our community.

Your feedback is very important because it's people like you who make the community at Clever Dodo.

Does anyone know where I can get an RJ11 to RJ45 cable to use a different router than MyT's modem?
I've got MyT at home and I don't find the modem they supply for internet to be very good. The modem/livebox sits in my living room and the WiFi signal gets really weak in one room which is on the same floor but a couple of metres away (about 10m).

That's why I'd like to use my NetGear router instead but the problem is that the cable that comes out of the telephone filter expects an RJ11 plug at the modem but my router needs an RJ45 plug instead.

I can get the cable on ebay but I wanted to know where I could find that in a local shop in Mauritius.

Thanks.

Where can I get a wheelie bin for my rubbish?
It seems that the municipality is not giving waste bins anymore and you have to wait when they start distributing application forms for bins. I cannot leave rubbish in black bin bags outside as dogs and other animals looking for food tear the bags apart and make a mess in front of the house.

So do you guys know where I can get the wheelie bins? They are quite high and have wheels to easily take them in and out.

Where to get iPhone repaired in Mauritius?
Does anyone know where I can get my iPhone repaired? My Home button is broken I think. I cannot access the home screen as a result, so if I'm on an app or reading my messages, I need to switch off my iphone to launch another app or make a call.

Just so you know, my iPhone was unlocked by the mobile network itself so it's not jailbroken or anything!

I'd rather not attempt opening the case myself and leave it to the professionals.

You can now use your Facebook account to log into Clever Dodo
A lot of people have been complaining that the login process was not very straightforward so this has been changed now. You can now use your facebook account to log into Clever Dodo :)

Facebook login process
On the login page, you just need to click on the facebook button and it will take you to facebook for authentication and then redirected to Clever Dodo. For registered users, the email address must be the same for both Facebook and Clever Dodo, otherwise a new account will be created. In the coming weeks, registered users who use a different email address on Facebook will have the option to link their accounts.

Normal login process
If you do not have a facebook a/c or want to explicitly create a local account on Clever Dodo, then that's still possible. Actually the process has become more simple. All you need is your email address and password to sign in. You can check the "remember me" option if you wish to remain logged in even after you close your browser, so basically the following day when you visit Clever Dodo, you will be automatically logged in.

Other changes
There have been quite a few minor changes as well like having the sharing buttons (Facebook, Twitter, Google+) on the left of the question while retaining its visibility when scrolling down.

If there are any problems when using the site, please let us know immediately through our contact form.

Thanks.

Are there any banks in Mauritius which cater for the muslim community, that is, comply with Islamic laws (Sharia)? Free WiFi on buses in Mauritius
Rose-Hill transport has introduced free Wi-Fi access when you travel with them. To use the service, you need to send a text message (sms) to 499 26 90 and you'll be issued with a code. Here are some points which have been raised about this free wifi on the buses:

  • How much does the text message cost to get access to the internet? (Rs0.60)
  • How long does the code last for once issued? (30mins I believe)
  • What do you need to write in the text message to get the password? (I think it could be left blank, not sure though)
  • When you try to connect to the WiFi, it asks for a username as well as a password, so what is the username? (anyone?)
  • It takes a long time to write the code/password as it's 10 characters long, so by the time I get connected to the WiFi, I've already reached my destination.

If you have used the free Wifi when travelling with Rose-Hill transport, let us know what the experience was like and answers to the questions above if you know.

limousinelimo interiorDo we have limousine services in Mauritius? I'm just wondering because some roads are very narrow and there are deep canals pretty much everywhere for waste water. That would surely damage the limousines right?

Anyway, if any of you have been in a limousine in our country (if we do have them), I'd like to hear how much that cost you?

Code postal Ile Maurice

Do planters use organic fertilizers in Mauritius?
Chemicals fertilizers have many advantages as they are fast acting, easy to apply and readily available and many planters seem to choose this type over organic fertilizers which are better for soil fertility, are long lasting and better for the environment.

So do you think the planters in Mauritius (or most of them) are using organic fertilizers like manure to help the growth of their crops? Would you prefer them to use organic stuffs or do you not mind at all?

When Clever Dodo was launched in April 2011, it was the first question & answer website for Mauritius and I knew back then that there would be a lot of copycats. 4 months after its launch and we now have the first copycat Answers.mu and it wouldn't surprise me to see many more popping up in the future.

The fact still remains that we are the first and the original one :)

Anyway what are your thoughts about this other site?

Fibre optic cable to access Internet in Mauritius
With fibre optic cables, you have less noise (interference) and can get way faster Internet speeds than with telephones lines. At the moment, the maximum speed for Internet in Mauritius is 2Mb (residential) but there's a project that the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology has in mind which could provide us with better surfing at home.

It's the introduction of fibre optic cables as a means of communication throughout the island. We'll be able to achieve internet connectivity at speeds of 10Mb and enjoy broadband as it should be.

But will that be affordable for everyone? Even ADSL is expensive at the moment!

Public WiFi zones in Mauritius
The Ministry of Information and Communication Technology has announced that 10 public WiFi zones will be created by December 2011. There will be one in each Municipality and another 4 in different rural areas as well as one in Rodrigues.

What I'd like to know is whether access to be WiFi will be free or will you have to pay to use the service. Note that it's going to cost them Rs10,000 a month to run the WiFi at each location, so they could well charge you to access it. What do you think?

Do you have to pay tax on your savings in Mauritius?
In the UK for example, if you have money in the bank, you have to pay tax on the interest accrued on the savings. So after your tax allowance, any other money that you make, be it from savings account, other wages, stock and shares, they all count towards your taxable income. Is it the same in Mauritius or do you just pay tax on your monthly wages?

When Caudan Waterfront opened its doors, everybody all around the island flocked to make it the most famous hangout place in Mauritius. People deserted places like Marie Reine de la Paix and Champs de Mars and all the attention was focused solely on Caudan.

The Mall of Mauritius will have entertainment, brands & lifestyle, supermarkets, motor city etc and with the opening scheduled very soon (29th of September 2011), will Bagatelle become the next hangout place?

Whether it's primary school or college, everyone now has the mindset that private tuitions are the key to success, otherwise a pass is not really guaranteed.

Many parents believe that teachers at school do not do enough and to make sure that their children pass with flying colours, they are 'forced' into going for private tutoring for all if not many subjects that they are studying.

Do you not think that private tuitions is getting out of control in Mauritius?

Why don't we have unemployment benefits in Mauritius?
There's a pension for most things like retirement, child allowance, disability, widow, carer etc. Then why not for those people who don't have a job?

Not being employed is one thing and being unemployed another. The difference is that the unemployed is someone who wants to work but can't get work for whatever reason whilst the other one is just too lazy to find a job to sustain himself and therefore becomes a parasite for the society.

Of course, there needs to be strict regulations in place so that people do not abuse the system and to make sure the funds are being used for a better cause and to help tackle unemployment in Mauritius as well as supporting those who are genuinely looking to secure a job.

What do you think?

Where is the cheapest place for car rental in Mauritius?
I'm looking to hire a car to drive around the island and I've paid around Rs800 per day before. Is that the going rate to rent cars now? I need a car for like 14 days, so the cheaper deal I can get, the better.

The person I rented the car before is just an individual, no registered business, nothing. He said that if I'm stopped by the police to tell them that we are friends and he lended me his car. It seems dodgy and I'm not sure how this works out for insurance if i havve an accident.

So is there a genuine car rental company that can provide better rates or match that?

Will there be a house price crash in Mauritius?
Looking at the house prices on L'Express Properties, it seems that the asking prices are extortionate and could lead to the property market seeing a crash similar to that it the UK and America.

I'm not sure whether the property prices advertised are more targetted to foreigners or mauritians living abroad but above Rs5M (5,000,000) for a decent house of 3 bedrooms, a living room, toilet and bathroom seems quite high, doesn't it?

The house prices are not going down and considering an average salary of Rs10,000 for a mauritian, it might be hard to afford a mortgage.

So do you think the house prices are fair (or am I looking in the wrong places for house prices) or is a property crash imminent?

Picpac: Of course! I saw lightnings.
(Suddenly there was a commotion in the centre of the field and many pupils had assembled)
Ticolo: Stay here. I am going to see what arrived
(A few minutes later, he returns and announces):
A boy fell down without knowledge. The professor says it is because of the sun. He is called zoreille. Do you know him?
Picpac: Yes, but he is not my army. He is a coconut eater. It is not easy with him.
Ticolo: Look at the small boy. He wants to run with a big. He will not be capable.
Picpac: I know him. He runs quickly. Small knife cut big pumpkin. His sister is a beautiful thirty-five. I am trying to put her in a circle, but I have no money. I am waiting for my condemned box to fill. Now my hand is under rock.
Ticolo: We must marry picker. I give you money.
Picpac: Don't tell her brother. If he knows, he will untie our race. He is a small chilli.
Ticolo: Are you to rest here a long time?
Picpac: No. If I felt an occasion, I am going to break the pause at Rose-Hill.
(He stood up and inadvertently crushed his friend's foot)
Ticolo: Eh, you monkey, you are blessing me again. You cannot make attention.
Picpac: Sorry, my black.

Driving licence in Mauritius
Different people will tell you different things. I've been to the Casernes 3 times and 3 different policemen told me 3 different things as well. I wanted to exchange my UK driving licence for a Mauritian one and they said I need to drive on my current licence for 3 years before I could exchange it. They've made an entry in their books so that they have a record of when I started driving in Mauritius.

As I've said before, I've been stopped for routine checks and so have my friends who hold foreign licences and we've never had any problems. On the Government website for Mauritius, it says "Any person holding a valid International Driving Permit or Driving Licence issued by a competent foreign authority shall not be required to pass a test". Here's a link to it : http://www.gov.mu/portal/site/police/men...

I can only tell from my own experience but at the end of the day it's upto you to decide what's best for you and your husband.

gices | 20 Apr 2012 12:41
Driving licence in Mauritius
Your husband can drive in Mauritius without any formalities. I hold a British driving licence and I've been stopped twice by the police for routine checks and never had any problems. Both Qatar and Pakistan have competent driving authorities and therefore he will not face any problems.

If you want peace of mind, you can drop into Casernes (Port-Louis Police Headquaters) and they will tell you the same thing.

Do not forget the driving licence when you come here and remember that we drive on the left hand side here.

For a personal website, just go with a .com or any other extension that is cheap. Cheapest web hosting you can get will be around Rs120 a month on a linux server.

The job situation in Mauritius – know the right people or stay unemployed!
Mauritius is NOT a person but rather a small developing island in the Indian Ocean close to Madagascar. The problem outlined here shows the unfairness that many youngsters have to endure because even with hard work (good education, willingness to work hard starting from the bottom), you cannot land yourself a job unless you know people in high places.
